Magic Stealing Creatures unleashed on Dardanos

(TIMES STAFF) During last gathering, several townsfolk unwitting opened a rift that unleashed a strange new creature to the lands of Dardanos. (see the letter below for an account of this occurrence).
Within hours of the rift’s opening, strange vaguely humanoid creatures with skin looking similar to dried mud with glowing cracks attacked Lindall. These creatures made a strange humming noise as well. They seemed to be attracted to magic, and even began to drain some of the Wards protecting Lindall’s buildings! During the attack one of the creatures engulfed the downed adventurer Rhys ap Ruald, who dissipated before he could be rescued. Rhys successfully resurrected that evening.
Sporadic attacks by these creatures continued day and night. Many adventurers defended the town while others left town to warn the locals nearby of the new menace.
Later it was discovered that the Osprey Wild Elf Tribe which lives in the area of the Lindon Forest, apparently had faced these creatures in the past, long before the rise of Caldaria. Apparently a Wild Elf named Nine Trolls holds a grudge of some sort against the Caldarians, and arranged the release of these creatures.
After repelling another attack of the magic stealing monsters, the adventurers of Lindall received a tip describing the location of Nine Trolls’ camp. Led by the new Seneschal Sir Nathan Leander (see related story), the adventurers of Lindall arrived at the camp in force. They attempted to negotiate a peaceful settlement, but reportedly Nine Trolls and his Wild Elves rejected all the overtures offered by the Seneschal and the adventurers. A battle ensured and many Wild Elves were taken captive, while some fled and others were killed.
The adventurer Air Raksa was also killed in the fighting, and since none of the adventurers had a Life spell, Air Raksa would subsequently resurrect. The adventurers brought the unconscious Nine Trolls over to Air Raksa’s body and healed him with the intention of forcing him to assist, but Nine Trolls immediately committed suicide. His body was reportedly mutilated and his camp was burned to the ground.
As the Times goes to print, no solution has been found to deal with the Magic Stealing Creatures, although efforts continue.
The Times also includes a letter from Scribe Riddick Dale concerning this matter:

Late during the first night of our gathering, Arno arrived at the door of the Phalanx home looking for me. He stated that he was sold information b a group of wild elves, led b the one we now know is Nine Trolls, regarding a rather large gemstone. Having been under his emplo previousl, I saw little danger in accepting his request to venture into the cave and retrieve this treasure for him.
I brought with me the entiret of the Phalanx, namel Dhara, Poalo, Theodin and Tianna, along with fellow adventurers Marra, Rhys and Xith. Our voage to the cave was uneventful, however, we found the entrance to the cave guarded by several living plants. With great care we, eliminated what threat the posed, and advanced into the cave. Several traps were expertl removed, and while exploring the cave Poalo stumbled across a large glowing stone slab. Upon entering the passage to the slab for further exploration, a large collapse took place blocking all of us within the walls of the cave.
The onl exit that we could find ended up being behind the large glowing stone mentioned earlier. Upon moving it, the stone shattered into dust and the rift began to open. At this point, we proceeded to make a swift exit as the rift began spewing celestial energies in random directions. Upon our arrival at the tavern to meet Arno, I advised him to seek out the elves that provided him false information. After a debriefing we began to return to our cabin to rest, and upon exiting the tavern we were attacked by these creatures that have been plaguing us ever since.

New Seneschal Appointed to Dardanos

(TIMES STAFF) The day before Forum in April, Sir Nathan Leander of the Duchy of Stephanos arrived in the town of Lindall. With Lord Jaden at his side, that evening he announced to the people of the town that he had been appointed to the position of Seneschal, filling the position vacated by Ellsworth DeMarco when he took on the role of Sorcerer of the Royal Arcanum.
Sir Nathan Leander has been a knight in the service of Duke Rogal Stephanos for more than thirty years, and has served with distinction in the Royal Army of Caldaria with the 19th Stephanos Ranger Regiment, attaining the rank of Centenar Major.
The Lindall Times extends its congratulations to the new Seneschal and wishes him the best in his new position.

Ex-Sorcerer Haven meets with Lindall spellcasters

(TIMES STAFF) On the night of Forum in April, a’Thales Haven, the ex-Sorcerer of Lindall and a criminal wanted for High Treason, the illegal Summoning of Elementals, and Attempted Murder, arrived in the town of Lindall accompanied by a spellcaster, a Death Elemental, and two Bone Golems.
He had apparently rented out the Three Brothers Tavern for a private function he was holding, and a large proportion of the adventuring population of Lindall attended. Notably, all those in attendance were spellcasters.
Haven had apparently used his magical skills to place his spirit within that of a powerful golem, and his skin shined a metallic color in the moonlight. He met with the spellcasters of Lindall for approximately one hour, and then departed with his guards. It is not known what transpired within the doors of the Three Brothers, but it cannot be good.
There was no attempt to apprehend the traitor Haven, even though Lord Jaden, Sir Nathan, and Squire Gnazz were all reportedly aware of Haven’s arrival.
The Order of the Golden Flame is currently offering any citizens a fifty Gold Crown reward for information leading to the capture of a’Thales Haven.

News from the Order of Light

By Master Li Kenji, Lindall Order of Light
I must first congratulate Marra Page, Jin Mei, and Nix for all of their hard work in the recent months. Based on glowing reports and successful completion of various tests, all three have been promoted to Initiates of the Lindall Order of Light. Well done.
Other congratulations are in order as well for Master Sun-Wu Lao. Master Lao has been selected to become the Master of the Ducal Order of Light in Vellarens, capital city of the Duchy of Stephanos. We wish him peace, wisdom and insight in his new position. With this change, I have been left in charge of the Lindall Order. Please feel free to speak to me about any issues that concern you, whether related to Earth magic or other topics.
The Order of Light is now in possession of a spell book containing the Earth Blade spell. This spell works similar to the Elemental Blade spell, allowing the wielder to inflict 5 more dagger blows of Earth damage to Undead with a weapon endowed by this spell. The total damage will bypass any armor and directly affect the creature that is hit. The wielder chooses when to use this strike. This spell can now be copied into personal spell books for the regular ink fee of 5 copper commons per level per spell. Please inquire at the earth circle. In addition, the Order of Light is currently scribing celestial spells for the Royal Arcanum for the same price until such time as the Arcanum replenishes its supply of magical ink.
Unfortunately there were a number of Resurrections over the past three days. While the Order of Light provides healing services and Resurrections free of charge, please be aware that in the process of a Resurrection, the earth circle consumes 10 silver coins. Any donations to help offset these costs would be appreciated. Thank you.
My final comment concerns the creatures emanating from the rift that was opened this past gathering. These creatures can engulf the wounded preventing any attempt at healing the fallen. Once the creature is killed, the only recourse to save the victim is by administering a Life spell. However, this process can be interrupted! It takes a short amount of time for these creatures to fully swallow their prey, during which time any damage from weapons or spells will stop the process. Please be aware of this and use it to our advantage the next time we face these beings. The more proactive we are, the fewer Life spells will be needed, and perhaps we can prevent further Resurrections.

New Positions Open

With the promotion of Marra Page, Jin Mei, and Nix to Initiates of the Lindall Order of Light, the Order is now accepting inquiries from potential Apprentices. Any interested party please contact me by missive or in person at the next gathering. If you have recently spoken with me, please contact me again so that I may officially record your name. Thank you.

Necromancer at Large

The captured necromancer this past gathering named Sym as his master and threatened that "Your circle shall be filled." It now appears that this person or group also used uncalled for force in the issue with the Wild Elf tribe, and have used the symbol of chaos as their mark.
This person or group needs to be apprehended for questioning in the matter of these issues and may be charged with several criminal charges. Anyone with information on "Sim"/"Sym" should address the information to Sir Nathan and the Lindall Watch.

Formation of Lindall Town Watch

(TIMES STAFF) At Forum Seneschal Leander announced the formation of the Lindall Town Watch. The Town Watch is responsible for enforcing the laws of the kingdom within the limits of the town of Lindall, as well as apprehending alleged lawbreakers and submitting them for judgment under the town Magistrate. Two members of the Town Watch have been inducted this forum, Goodman Kostantinos and Goodman D’Avignon. Lord Jaden was appointed to the position of Magistrate. Members of the Town Watch can be recognized by their distinctive red sash.
The Lindall Times extends its congratulations to Kostantinos and D’Avignon, and wishes them the best in their new positions.

To all and singular who this ma present:

Ma this writ bearing the seal and signature of Sir Nathan, Seneschal of Dardanos bear witness to the formation of, and grant authorit to the Lindall Watch, Constables and Reeves of the town of Lindall. That the, within their duty, shall enforce all lawful arrests of people found breaking the laws of the Baron or the town of Lindall. That said persons should be brought immediatel before the lawful authorit of Magistrate in civil manners and ranking present noble in matters of Roal, Ducal or Baronial concern.
May this writ also determine that the ranking members of the watch shall determine the membership with all authorit going to the Nobility.

Search for Baroness Continues

(TIMES STAFF) The search for the whereabouts of Baroness Lanthlidis Dardanos continues as both Lord Jaden and Sorcerer DeMarco have scoured the barony for any sign of the Baroness without success.
The Baroness has been missing for more than ten weeks now, and the people of Dardanos have begun to lose hope that she will ever return.
As of March 19 of this year, the Order of the Golden Flame declared the Baroness missing, and is offering a reward of two hundred gold crowns for any valid information as to the whereabouts of the Baroness.

Warning Report

By Gnazz Sunderdragon, Guest Writer
Citizens of Dardanos, I write in report of warnings to be noted in the area. Currently a magical force has been unleashed in the area. Creatures appearing to be made of mud that has cracks with a white glow protruding have been appearing. They seem drawn to magical energies and have been seen draining magical wards throughout Lindall. If any are spotted please notify your local guardsmen or militia and have word sent to the Noble Household of Dardanos, or the Adventurers that you have heard of remaining in Lindall. For now, please stay away from areas that are reported to have these creatures in them, and do not go out alone.
The shadow beasts still inhabit our areas. They still maintain the power to take control of people’s bodies and force those bodies to do things they wouldn’t normally do. Please be on your guard for anyone acting out of the ordinary. It is suspected that a more powerful line of these beasts are in our areas and that they have the ability to speak while controlling a body. Please be careful with any person not seeming themselves.
The Kurzinnor to our south have been somewhat dormant as of late. This is however not good news. It is perhaps the calm before the storm.
According to the new Master of Light, Master Li Kenji, the plague has gone into remission. This is indeed good news for us, however we must remain vigilant. If any new cases come up, please report them immediately.
Finally the Broken Circle bandits have not been heard from since last fall. It is my impression that they were successfully routed and any remaining members have since disbanded. How ever any information leading to a remaining group of Broken Circle bandits still in operation would be appreciated.
I would like to close this warning report with a specific thanks to Goodman Lyle Zaradan of the Adventurers class, last gathering he sacrificed himself in aid of his comrades. I am still uncertain of the details, but as I was told, he gave himself to the darkness to allow his comrades a chance of escape, at which point the light pulled him from the grips of what he said could have been his final death, and forced him back into our world. The actions of men like this, as well as many others who I have not named specifically are what will make these reports read with more successes than warnings.

Necromancer Captured

By Felix Alderson, Guest Writer
Guardian Kenji sent a group of townspeople on a mission for the Order of Light – Jin Mei, Marra, Nix, Fidget, and Drake were chosen for the expedition. They were sent to a cave outside Lindall reputed to contain a scroll of interest to the healers. The mission proved difficult from the start - even the entrance to the cave was trapped. Our floppy-eared neighbor Fidget managed to disarm a powerful explosive attached to a trip wire, but accidentally set off a second trap of a magical nature. It cast a spell upon all those who entered, which used the power of the earth to destroy undead. It did them no harm besides removing protectives, though its purpose became clear later.
Within the cave was a strange tomb. The corpse was laid out on a bier, clutching a piece of paper in its hand. Two statues posted a silent watch on either side. Fidget approached the corpse cautiously, trying to pry the paper from the dead fingers. As soon as she touched it, though, the two statues started to move. They bludgeoned her with fists of stone as she retreated, scroll in hand. Luckily the group evaded the statues, but another opponent blocked their path; a necromancer and his hordes of the dead. He demanded the scroll - which, of course, they refused - and battle ensued. Undead succumbed quickly to the spells of the healers but Fidget fell to a death spell. Townsfolk reported seeing Nix running up the hill in Lindall carrying Fidget in his arms, calling for a life spell, but none was available. Her spirit was strong, fortunately, and she resurrected in Lindall's circle.
The necromancer was captured and confessed to his crimes. He testified that his master, who goes by the name Sym, ordered him to retrieve the same scroll which the healers obtained. Currently in our jail, he awaits the sentence of obliteration pronounced by Sir Nathan. (Despite the researches of our town scribe, the seneschal has pointed out that no connection has yet been proven between the use of necromancy and the letter Y; therefore, use of the letter cannot be considered evidence against anyone.)
Sir Nathan has also declared the cave off limits to adventurers. While the treasure has been gathered the dangers of the place remain. Anyone driven to enter the cave by greed or curiosity is likely to find their deaths at the hands of monsters and traps but is unlikely to find anything of value to reward their sacrifices. The entrance has been marked with a rune by the Seneschal's agents to warn off unsuspecting visitors; it resembles a combination of a lower case 'y' with an upper case and reversed 'L'. If you see this mark do not enter the cave - on pain of the Duke's justice, if you live that long.

The Royal Army needs YOU!

The 19th Stephanos Rangers Regiment is currently recruiting! We are seeking men and women; warriors, scouts, mages and healers; people of integrity and honor to serve their duchy and kingdom in its time of need.

The 19th Stephanos Ranger Regiment

The 19th Stephanos Ranger Regiment was formed in the year 425 C.R. It has served with distinction during the Second Kurzinnor War, by continually harassing the Kurzinnor forces that invaded the duchies of Ordin and Vestria. In 499 King Gaius Phedron credited the 19th Stephanos Ranger Regiment for delaying the Kurzinnor forces in northern Ordin, giving the rest of the Caldarian Army the time it needed to cross the River Desal and regroup in Vestria.
The 19th Stephanos Rangers continue to form a defense of Caldaria. While other army units have held the line against the Kurzinnor advance, the Rangers have formed a more fluid defense, raiding into occupied territory while keeping a watch on the southern border of the duchy of Stephanos.
Recruits should be motivated, dedicated individuals with initiative and integrity who have a desire to serve the kingdom and protect it and its citizens from all its enemies. Enlistment terms are a minimum of one year.
Recruits who graduate from Basic Training are promoted to the rank of Soldier and receive pay equivalent to 5 silver pieces per Gathering of service. Training in all skills will be provided by the Royal Army depending upon availability. Weapons, Armor, Spellbooks, and supplies will be provided by the Army depending upon availability and mission requirements.
During Gatherings the Royal Army will provide Soldiers with their duty schedules. Soldiers are not on duty 24 hours a day--however, they must be prepared to go on duty at any time if a mission requires it.
Serving in other organizations does not necessarily preclude you from serving in the Royal Army. Members of both the Order of Light and the Royal Arcanum can and do serve in the Royal Army. So long as you recognize that your highest duty is to the kingdom and the Royal Army of Caldaria, and that you may be called to duty at any time, there should be no conflicts with many of Caldaria’s other worthy organizations.
Basic Training for new recruits will be taking place during the May gathering. See Vintenar Major Bangor in the Three Brothers Tavern on the night before Forum in May to have your questions answered and to enlist.
Inquiries may also be addressed here, or directly to the Royal Army by courier.

Vintenar Major Bangor, Adjutant
19th Stephanos Rangers

A Letter from a Concerned Citizen

It has recently come to my attention that my name is being befouled by the townspeople of Lindall. That I am being called greedy, that the release of these magic eaters is my fault, and that somehow it is my hands that are dirty.
First I would like to say that my resources have been drained trying to keep these creatures from draining my wards, and from doing other damage to my various properties throughout Dardanos, and beyond. Why would I ever do something that would cause me harm, and to lose money? Anyone who knows anything about Hoblings should know better than that.
I did not release these creatures, your own townsperson Riddick has admitted that it was his group that performed the action that released these creatures. While it is true that he was on a mission for me, it was a mission that he and his friends were well compensated for, and they had accepted the fact that there were likely to be risks involved. It is clear that I and the townspeople of Lindall were set up as this information lead to a trap sprung on us by this person Nine Trolls. I then spent considerable time & resources to find out further information about this Nine Trolls and where he was hiding and provided this information to the citizens of Lindall. At no time did I ask for compensation for this information, and at no time was I even thanked for going through this trouble; instead I am labeled as greedy and a troublemaker.
As I have told other people in town, I am not an adventurer. Some might even say that I am not a brave man, I am but a simple businessman. Twice now I have come to the adventurers of Lindall for help with my business ventures, these adventurers were well paid and told they could keep anything else found for themselves. This is a fair and equitable deal for the danger that they may or may not face. In fact it is more than many adventurers ever get, most throwing themselves recklessly into danger for the chance at glory and riches, as at least these adventurers were paid up front for the risk to their lives.
It is however apparent that the citizens of Lindall wish to label all of those who attempt to better themselves as greedy, I once had fond memories of this town as it is where I made my home for many years. It was because of this fondness that I frequently came back to Lindall to seek adventurers to help me out in my business ventures. However, seeing the bile that was thrown my way by blue tunic'd fools who have lived here for less than a year has ensured that I will look to other towns to hire adventurers.
